Abstracting the Landscape: A One Day Painting Workshop - Saturday, 18th April 2026
In Person - Saturday, 18 April | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Lovat Bank
37 Silver Street, Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, MK16 0EJ
Immerse yourself in a day of colour, atmosphere, and creative exploration in this inspiring workshop led by Helen Simms. Abstracting the Landscape invites you to move beyond literal representation and discover new, expressive ways of responding to the world around you.
Whether you are just beginning your painting journey or are an experienced artist wanting to refresh and loosen your approach, this workshop will encourage experimentation and intuitive mark-making. Through guided exercises, live demonstrations, and supported studio time, you’ll explore how memory, emotion, and personal response can transform a landscape into something dynamic and abstract.
Set within the beautiful, light-filled historic surroundings of Lovat Bank, you’ll enjoy a focused yet relaxed environment designed to nurture creativity and confidence.
During the workshop you will:
Explore abstraction through shape, line, rhythm, and movement
Learn how to simplify complex scenes into strong, balanced compositions
Experiment with expressive colour palettes that evoke mood and atmosphere
Develop techniques for layering, texture, and confident brushwork
Leave with at least one resolved painting and new approaches to take into your own practice
Workshop Highlights:
Maximum of 10 participants - ensuring individual guidance and feedback
All materials provided (though you’re welcome to bring favourite tools or paints)
Tea, coffee, and light refreshments available throughout the day
Option to explore nearby Newport Pagnell for lunch or bring a packed lunch to enjoy on-site
This workshop offers a welcoming and supportive space to experiment, take creative risks, and reconnect with your artistic instincts. It’s ideal for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of abstraction while enjoying a focused day of painting in a stunning setting.
